1. A proceeding in which a convicted person asks a higher court to overturn a conviction or sentence received in the trial court based on errors which appear in the trial record.
2. An appeal from a lower tribunal’s decision directly to the jurisdiction’s highest court, bypassing the intermediate appellate court. A direct appeal may be used when the case involves the constitutionality of a state law.
